Who does the physical examination of the newborn baby in the delivery room?

by Chris

I want a job in the medical field that deal with babies in a hospital. I love babies and I was just wondering who does the physical examination of the newborn. How much do that make a hour? Is there a specific person for that? What is the name of the person? Please be specific as you can, I would like all of the details. Thanks!

When I gave birth, my General Doctor that I have been going to since I was born delivered our son [he is also certified in Labour&Delivery]. He also was the Doctor to do the medical check of my son when he was born, and to stitch me back up.

I’m pretty sure it’s the pediatrician on call, or sometimes it’s the pediatrician that the parent’s pick. They don’t make an hourly wage. They make really high salary.

If you’re not wanting to go to med school, maybe become a RN (registered nurse) and work in Labor and Delivery. Or, maybe you can work in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit). But, you have to be a nurse and go to nursing school. I’m not too sure how much they make, but I know it’s good money.

My son’s pediatrician did his first exam. My husband and I found the pediatrician before he was born. When it came time for delivery, she was called in and there when he was born. It was great especially since he had serious medical problems when he was born.

Births that I have been to had a nursing team look over the baby until the doctor finished up with the mom unless their was a problem with the infant and they called the on-call pediatrician. I’m not sure who does the exam when the baby is taken to the nursery, but probably the on-call pediatrician. Like I said earlier, my own doctor was there.

Either way – medical doctors require an undergrad degree which takes at least 4 years. Then med school, internships, residencies, etc. which will be at least another 8 years after the undergrad.

Nurses require at least a 2 year degree. There are 2 year Associate degree RN programs and 4 year Bachelor RN programs.

Most of these people do not get paid hourly and salaries vary.
