How many newborn size diapers and wipes should we stock up on before our son arrives?

by Chris

We estimated that he’ll probably be changed roughly 10 to 12 times a day, but how long do they usually stay in the newborn size? My boyfriend keeps asking me about all this stuff thinking I already know because I have a son, but he’s 8 years old and I don’t remember anything really. I’m having to re-learn everything.

wipes are great to stock up on but they usually are not in newborn diapers too long so be careful. and never open more then the one you are using in case you would have to take them back for the next size up.

It just depends on how big he is when he’s born and how fast he grows. My girl was 6 lbs 12 oz and she was in newborn diapers for at least the first month and a half. My advice is to buy at least one (maybe 2) big boxes of them and then maybe several other smaller packs. It’s better to be overstocked than under, as a lot of places allow you to switch them out for bigger sizes.

It depends on the baby. My son was born weighing 6 lbs 11 oz. and he wore the newborn size for only a few weeks. My neighbor bought us a huge box of diapers and he didn’t even use half of them because of how fast he grew out of them. I say buy a box or two and wait and see how fast he grows until you decide whether to buy more newborn diapers or size one. Also, my doctor gave us the pack of newborn diapers they opened in the hospital for him so that’s always a start..

We only bought 1 pkg of newborn size to begin with. She wenbt into seze 1′s pretty quickly. Wipes you could stock up on but if we had stocked up on huggies it would have all gone to waste as oiur daughter had an allergis reaction to them. the only brand we use is pampers and they’re really good at sending 3$ off coupons monthly.

Two to three large boxes should be a good start. How quickly this child grows cannot be predicted.

I wouldnt advise yu to go crazi with buying just newborn size diapers becuase my daughter went to size 1 really fast and we had some newborn size ones tht went to waste..so i wuld say about a hundred or maybe 2 and get size one in case he/she ups a size and yu dnt hae time to run to the store and get a bigger size…

i bought 2 boxes, i think i must have only bought 1 small pack before she was up another size… if you stock up on things go for wipes and things that have a long shelf life and are not size specific bubble bath, creams etc…

It depends on your baby’s size and how quickly he grows. My daughter wore newborns for at least a month but my sister in law’s baby was done with them in two weeks.

Save the receipt so you can exchange unused ones.

In the next ultrasound, ask how much your baby weights currently and then you can make an estimation.

Stock up on wipes, good idea :)

I wouldn’t buy too many packs of newborn. Buy more 1s and 2s than newborn. If you happen to need another pack of newborns, you can always run out and get it. Just buy a few cases of wipes, they might dry out. I just bought a case of Huggies wipes and they are dried out! So they must dry out over time. I’ll be calling Huggies about this one lol.

I would skip buying newborn and just buy size 1′s. I received a bunch of newborns at my baby shower and he was born 9 lbs 10.8oz and went straight to size 1′s. They had him in 1′s at the hospital so we ended up returning quitea few packs of newborns.Wipes are good to stock up on but those you should buy the gentle kind that are fragrence free to see how it reacts with your babys skin. I know quite a few babies that have to use special kinds of wipes and diapers because of how they react to their skin..so really I wouldn’t stock up too much cuz your baby can have a reaction to certain ones..maybe just buy a pack of each until you know if the fragrences in the diapers or wipes will cause a reaction.

It depends on how large your child is at birth, some kids never use newborn size. I wouldn’t buy more that one large box (~90 diapers usually). Some kids are also allergic to certain brands (both mine were allergic to Huggies) so you don’t want to buy too many until you find out. Wipes will be used regardless of size so buy as many as you want. Go for an unscented or allergen free wipe to decrease the chance your newborn will get a rash from them- newborn skin can be very sensitive.

You can never EVER have enough wipes, but I would just get one box of diapers. You might have a big baby who can only wear them a few days. You never know.

My daughter was never in newborn diapers. They were too small for her. I had 6 that came free with my diaper genie and I used one only to take if off an hour later and go to size 1 because it was already starting to leak. She was 8lbs 10oz at birth. I personally wouldnt stock up on any newborn diapers. Maybe buy 1 package and go from there. If you need more then its nothing to grab another package. As for wipes…you can basically buy as many as you want since they can be used on babies of any size but I still wouldnt stock up too much. Your baby could be sensitive to something in the wipes and you not be able to use them.

My daughter went through 4 boxes of 100 until she was in the next size at about 6 weeks old.

You will need at least ONE big box that you get at Toysrus/Costco/BJs. We needed one more b/c hubby did all the diaper changing and sometimes he would get peed/pooped on multiple times during a change. My son actually stayed in size 1 the shortest time.

It really just depends on the kid… I’d say stock up on a lot of wipes! You can never have too many of those around. My son was a week overdue and weight 7lbs 1oz and was in newborn diapers for the first six weeks. He would’ve stayed in them longer, but we had a bunch of size ones that fit him okay and just started on those a little early.

Just buy some and keep the receipts so you can exchange them. There’s no real way to know how long he’ll need them.

17 Mum of 2 + 8 month old twins :) 04.01.10 at 4:25 pm

I had twins i went through 600 Diapers in 6 weeks! They were in new born Diapers for 6 and 8 weeks but my twins were 5lb 8oz and 6lb 4oz so depends on the size of your baby id say 4 to 8 weeks they will be in newborn diapers ,As for wipes we went through over 240 a week so stock up and fingers crossed he has no colic cause they poop more , but your right around 10 wet and dirty diapers a day . Good luck just buy a few bulk boxes and do the same with the wipes dont worry to much but it is handy to stock up i did the same with creams and baby wash .
