How to Deal With the Effects of Acid Reflux in Babies

by Chris

Acid levels increase both in adults as well as babies. Adults can tell what they are feeling but incase of babies the parents have to take utmost care and keep a record of the babies’ health. And accordingly a proper doctor should be consulted. Usually a baby reflux disappears with the growing age of the baby. It can vanish till the baby becomes 6 to12 months old. However, if the reflux is still there a doctor needs to be informed.

Acid reflux in babies is caused because the digestive system is not fully developed. This results into the food coming back in the throat. Due to weak functioning of the esophagus there is backward traveling of acid.

It is not an easy task to detect the reflux in babies. Consulting a doctor is mandatory in this case. The common indication of this is “spiting up.” Spiting can occur even if the baby sneezes or coughs. Doctor’s advice may vary with the severity of the disease.

Cause of the reflux:

Acid travels back due to the fragile covering of the flap which covers the esophagus. The contents of the stomach also come back in the throat along with the gas, making the baby throw what has been eaten.

Signs of acid reflux in babies:

Throwing out or vomiting as it can be called is clearly a widely seen picture in the babies.

They tend to spit up all that they have eaten and end up getting messed up! Since their digestive system is delicate, they sometimes cannot tolerate the pressure. Loosing of weight is also noticed in some babies. Though some babies spit up they are quite healthy. Continuous and frequent fever can also be observed in several babies. Breathing disorders, voice changes, difficulty in swallowing can also be observed.

Knowing the changes:

If you notice any irregular changes in your baby’s health it is time to consult the doctor.

Preventing the mess:

Some small caring steps towards your baby’s health would prevent the embarrassing situation and would progress the baby’s growth.

Feed your baby with extra small meals with uniform gaps between the feeds. Let the gas pass away by holding the baby straight while and after feeding. Burping will reduce the pressure on the digestive system. Make the baby burp!

Feeding him/ her natural food is essential. Breast feed is the lightest and the healthiest food for your baby. This also builds a bond between the mother and the baby.

Make the baby sleep in the right position. Raise the baby’s head while sleeping at night and in the day time you can make him/her lie on the stomach for half an hour after its meal. Thickening consistency of the cereal can also be done after taking doctor’s opinion.

Include new food items, make changes in the diet. You can also use the Pillow specially designed for the reflux patients, for making the baby sleep. With small changes in the baby’s lifestyle and a little care you can make big difference.
