Does A Baby Need Health Insurance Right When The Baby Is Born? ?

by Chris

How much does it usually cost? ……. Is it the law that everyone HAS to have health insurance or is it just really necessary? My parents still pay for mine cause im 16. But the doctor said that its my job to make sure it has health care. So is it possible that the baby can get free health care? Like is there a program that offers you any health care for your baby?

Yes, your baby will need coverage.
I got pregnant with my daughter when I was 20 and was still on my parents insurance so all I did was pay my co-pay and I was covered. They covered my daughter as well after I added her to our policy as long as I pay about 100 bucks a month for her and a little for her visit for her vaccines, check up. It’s extremely important to have coverage for your child. You may need to take him/her to the hospital and without coverage you’ll pay more for one visit to the e.r. then you would for a whole year of insurance coverage. There’s medicaid you can get, I looked into it, but since I had coverage and had the ability to put her on mine it wasn’t something I wanted to do. Just look into it, you have to do research a/t everything..pregnancy, your baby, you need to be extremely prepped for what’s gonna happen.

Your baby definitely needs health insurance. When I had my son the pediatrician examined him when he was first born. I also had him circumcised and his newborn screening, all of which cost money and I was billed for. I put him under my insurance from my employer (Empire blue cross, blue shield). The hospital and his doctor billed the insurance as soon as I got a card for him. Usually insurances will date the start date from the birth of the baby and cover costs that occurred from his birth, if you sign up for the insurance within thirty days of the child’s birth. I don’t know what state you are in but in NY children under 2 are automatically eligible for health insurance, either Child Health Plus or Medicaid. The cost the parent pays depends on income and since you are so young you’re child is probably eligible. I don’t know for sure because you parent’s income may affect this because you do live with them. I am not going to criticize you for having a baby young although I do feel you should have waited but I will ask that you continue to go to school. I hope you finish high school and go on to college and it can be done. I work with teenagers at TASA and many of the teen parents are enrolled in college.

Insurance is required for prenatal care, which is more important and crucial to the development and health of the baby. Yes, you will need insurance. It is not law. It is your job to make sure your child has health care, and he/she is right. You will no longer be the child, you will now be a provider and a mother. You need to check into your local human services dept, welfare to be blunt. We have the Oregon Health Plan it’s mostly for parents with no or low income. Not all states have this. There is no such thing as free Health Care. Even on the OHP you must pay fees, co-pay’s and such. You parents need to sit you down and show you how insurance works and what terms mean. You can also ask your doctor how to provide your child with health care. You will have about 4-6 months of downtime to adjust to being a mother. After that you may be looking for work that offers health benefits. If you stay in school you may work part time. In our state the father is required to help with medical costs and other needs…I hope yours is the same. Best Wishes.

you have 30 days from the time of birth to get health insurance (through work). If not you wil have to pay the hospital after that. Your insurance company gives you 30 day time frame. You have to give them proof of birth at the hospital. Once you get your health card, you then have to call the hospital and give them your insurance number. If you already got a bill (like i did), the insurance then pays for it.

Depending on where you live, you may qualify for very low cost insurance for the kids…In Georgia, we have Peachcare, which is like
$10 a month or something. It’s gonna be hard to pay for your child’s medical bills without healthcare, so I encourage you to get informed quickly. Check with your state or local health dept first, and go from there.

suppose your baby is born normal, 2 or 3 months later, you discover he has serious health problems, how will you pay for his medical care? you could go to department of human services in your area, you should be able to recieve free medical insurance. if not, there are all kinds of programs out there for you to get help. please don’t think your baby does not need medical insurance. babies are very costly, don’t add medical expences if you can’t afford them. good luck! god bless you and your baby.

Ughhhh…. you need to get health insurance for your baby, yes, and if not, it costs in the thousands of dollars for the hospital bills for birth and all that stuff. You could try to apply for medicaid but it’s disgusting and ridiculous to have a baby that you yourself cannot afford, the tax payers don’t want to pay for your mistake.

So what you are saying is you are 16 and you had a baby and now you expect us tax payers to support your kid by paying for it’s health insurance… that’s what you saying…… this is a prime example of why it’s so looked down upon for you teens to have babies.. you don’t even know if your child NEEDS health insurance.
yes your baby can get welfare, yes it’s really is your responsibility to insure this child… but you’re 16 so you have no clue where to begin….

YES!!! Three days after they are born, then once a week, till they are 1 to 2 months, then its every month till they are 6 months, then its 3 months every third month till they are a year, then its once a year. That’s providing that they don’t get hurt! ER visits cost! There is no law, but you may be able to get a medical card to cover it.

Can’t your parents add your baby to theirs? If not, I’m certain your baby would qualify for free or very cheap state health insurance. And your baby HAS to have health insurance. It’s VERY necessary!

Many states offer free or reduced health insurance for low income families. I assume since you are only 16 that you have very little income.

You could probably get on Medicaid. Or try child support from the father, no reason why tax payers should have to pay for it.
