What Is The Best Way To Start Potty Training A 2 Year Old?

by Chris

We want to start potty training my step son but i have no clue how to potty train a boy! He is very stubborn and doesn’t even eat with a fork or a spoon (he eats with his hands) he crys when we make him sit down on the pot just to familiarize him with it…HELP! He wakes up in the morning with a dry diaper and goes a long time without peeing in his diaper so i think he ready.

First of all, don’t make him sit on the potty. Be positive and don’t push it at all. Put the potty in the living room or play room and PLAY with it. Sit his toys or whatever on the potty and show him how THEY use it. You can also try the elmo potty time DVD, it’s awesome!
Take his diaper off and use underwear, even though it will be messy, it’s best.
I know your pain, my LO just turned two a couple weeks ago and he pped on the potty for the first time today…and I wasn’t even asking him too, after all the asking and pleading, he just did it on his own when I was least expecting it!
Please check my blog for more info on potty training and toddler development. I put new info up all the time! On there I have some great books and suggestions.

my son(2) cried when we first put my son on potty, its normal esp for boys. i got a padded childs toilet seat to place on top of usual one so my son didnt fall down toilet!! and a step so he could climb up himself if he wanted. me and my husband also allow him to come into the bathroom when we use the toilet sohe learns what a toilet is for and then offer if he wants to have a try, we also bought a sticker chart and a potty book which helped. after a few turns on the big toilet ( which we cheered and praised my son for) he sat on potty no problem. he had his first day in underpants today, it didnt go well but were gonna keep trying!!!

in stages. look up a good website. but i think it went somehting like this. learn the vocab wee poo potty etc. learn about wet and dry. be able to remove clothes (in a hurry lol). then lots of rewards and no pressure. teaching sitting as its easiest they learn to stand when ready. put him in front of a dvd he likes – that what we did lol, it meant he sat for long enough to ‘do’ something and then we praised an rewarded! buy some fun pants so he doesn’t want to have to take them off cause their wet

I suggest you read this article written by the Mayo clinic. It was very helpful when my sister started potty training my nephew.

He will show you the signs when he is ready to be potty trained.
Here are some of the most common signs:
1. Takes Off Own Clothes
Let’s face it. The first step to becoming dry begins with your toddler’s ability to recognize he has to go to the bathroom. The second step is his ability to pull down his pants, or lift up her dress. The third step is actually going to use the potty. If your child begins insisting on taking off his clothes then he probably is ready to begin training for the potty.
2. Talks about Using the potty
He may say, “I want to use the potty.” Or, he may just point to it and sit down. Either case he is showing an extreme interest in the little chair. Well, what do you do if he’s interested in sitting; maybe he’ll be interested in using it. You never know unless you try. Hey diapers are expensive why spend more on them if you don’t have to.
3. Does a potty Dance?
There are some children doing potty dance? Does your little one have a routine? Does he stomp, turn, twist, and grab his groin like Michael Jackson? If he does, then that’s his potty dance. He’s ready, ready, and ready if he has his own version and he dances it whether there’s music on or not.
4. Shows an Interest in the Bathroom or Toilet
This is the big koruna of all ready signs. The big earthquake so to speak. If your child is curious about the bathroom or toilet, then he’s ready to learn how to use it. Is he curious about how it flushes? Well, that’s because he wants to know how that giant white chair works. Why does it make that sound? It’s a noise like no other. He’s not being bad when you have to drag him out of the toilet. He wants to know what the toilet is. He wants to know how it works. He is ready, ready, and ready for potty training.
5. Stays Dry Overnight & During Naps
This is a hard readiness sign to understand. If you child staying dry overnights and at naptime that is the sign that he is ready for potty training. In any event, your child is ready if he displays this sign.
Now, does your child exhibit any two of these ready signs? If so, then get ready to do your potty training. You will never know those signs if you are not pay attention to their reaction.
Don’t worry about it.
My 4 year old son was just recently potty trained.
