Mommytothree asked:
I was never able to get through the first week breast feeding with my first two babies. I was always afraid they’d starve because I had no milk yet. I know they’re not supposed to have great hunger for the first few days, BUT THEY CRIED??!! I really want to establish breast feeding this time around. Please give me your week 1 survival tips.

Use a nipple shield if you have latch problems. Get educated (read, read, read!) Nurse the baby when he cries, it will make your milk come in faster. The baby gets colostrum, and that is plenty.
these people have a bunch of material
I know nothing but I’ve read that babies get skinnier at first then plump up; you could ask your physician if that might go with your milk production period
Yay You
Hold him/her nice and snugly, feed while laying down and try not to worry they will get all they need. You worry and the baby knows your feelings, it has shared them with you for the last 9 months felt your joy, happiness, laughed with you, felt sad with you and felt stress with you. By feeding laying down you should feel more relaxed, try to read or listen to music while feeding, it will help take your mind off of what you are doing. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do great.
Spend the week at home, take time to catch your breath, don’t go rushing out. Ask visitors to come at a set time, don’t worry about asking them to go, everyone understands.
obviously while you are first feeding keep checking with your midwife just incase you are worried, but babies get all they need from you for the first 6 months!! They need nothing else but you milk!
If it hurts, check baby is on properly, maybe buy a comforter or pacifier if you find your baby is crying all the time, just make sure to hold your baby close to assist with bringing your milk in!
One thing that I found really helped me with my baby was skin on skin during and after feeds.. it also comforted her alot!
When I had my son he was a big hungry baby, and for the first two days he was happy with the colostrum. Then, on day three he was STARVING…. I understand the crying. He wanted heaps and heaps of milk, but it hadn’t come in yet. Luckily I was still at the hospital and they rigged up a little device – a very thin piece of tube that they placed in a small bottle of formula. The midwife taped the tube to my breast, and so my hungry son got some food in his tummy (from the formula), and my nipple was still being stimulated. I am sorry that I can’t remember what the nurse called this apparatus, but it was very helpful, and my milk came in the next day. Unfortunately, all you can do is persevere till your milk comes in, as the milk letdown reflex requires nipple stimulation.
Good luck.
Hi there,
I have breastfed both of my sons for 2 years each and I found that even though it is really sore and tiring you just have to break through the pain to get it established if it is sore.
My first son my nipples were so cracked the midwife said she had never seen anything like that before and I sat on the bed crying cos I couldnt do it anymore but then I just went through the pain for a couple more days and it got heaps better. The main thing to remember is that they are not hungry that puts alot of mothers off B/F but they are fine and in a few more days there will be heaps of milk.I think the biggest mistake is giving them a bottle bcos then the breast will not be enough for them
Best of luck Any questions just ask:)
Drink until your eyeballs are swimming. Eat lots of oatmeal. Buy some More Milk Plus, Get some breast soothies. Relax. Just take the time with your baby. Don’t worry about schedules or time frames, just nurse often and call the La Leche League if you run into problems.
I had major troubles breast feeding – my bub wouldn’t open her mouth at all so I expressed & fed her with a bottle until she finally got the idea!!! I used the tommee tippee teats that are similar shape to the breast. This way she got fed and my milk stayed. I used a dummy whilst I was expressing to ease her hysterics – worked well. It did take 6 weeks or so but it was sooo worth it. No problems at all now.
Good luck – hope it works out for you both.
To get more milk you can ask you doctor for a prescription for Reglan, which will increase your milk production. Or if you are more herbalistic. Go to a health food store and ask for the herb that increases milk production. Fenugreek is most recommended but you can also try Blessed Thistle. We tell our moms in the unit to use them if they are having trouble.
Good day
